r/travel is a Reddit community centred around exploring the world through travel, featuring photos, questions, stories and thoughts from across the globe. It currently boasts 1.6 million subscribers and has become one of the best resources on the internet for discovering inspiring ideas for travel.&nbsp;What I like best about r/travel is the layout of the different sections at the top, which are set out as if using a flight booking website. The sections include departures (featuring airfare search guide, airports and planes and travel by train) arrivals (accommodation information, from hotels to couchsurfing), travel tips and related subs. This makes it easy to quickly find the topic you’re looking for without having to spend time searching around.&nbsp;Another great feature is the ‘Topic of the Week’ under the ‘Destinations’ tab. The topics are broken down into different countries, ranging from Argentina to Vietnam, and include ‘Off the tourist trail’ guides that focus on the areas in countries outside the typical tourist hotspots. This is great for those looking to gain a more authentic and realistic experience of a country as it includes lots of tips and advice that traditional guidebooks may not contain.&nbsp;The Reddit also has a Free Phrasebook that takes you to a new page where you can select the language you would like to learn. The choice of languages is extensive, including Afrikaans, Danish and Yiddish, and offers a phrase list with all the basics, as well as how to pronounce each letter.&nbsp;One problem with r/travel is that some of the links in the categories at the top take you to third-party websites that are not that helpful or relevant to what you’re looking for. For example, the link to ‘Train Travel’ takes you through to a website called Seat 61, rather than offering advice on websites to book trains with.

r/backpacking is a subreddit for travellers looking for inspiring ideas, hints questions, advice and photos. It boasts over 640,000 subscribers, making it one of the most popular travelling subreddits out there, while hundreds of new posts appear on the feed everyday. As the name suggests, it is mainly targeted at people for are looking to go backpacking rather than travel in luxury, however it is a source of inspiration for all those who have an interest in exploring the world.&nbsp;What I like best about browsing through r/backpacking is the variety of shared content, from lists to videos to graphs showing the breakdown of costs for a backpacking trip. Such a wide variety of different content is difficult to find anywhere else, and with such a large number of subscribers, new stuff appears everyday. Not only does this make the subreddit engaging, it also means it is a fantastic resource for planning a trip or simply finding out a bit more information on a destination before arriving.&nbsp;Another aspect of the subreddit that I find particularly useful is that much of the content and advice that is shared features off the beaten track information, rather than simply pointing you towards the tourist hotspots. This differs from traditional guidebooks that may miss out the secret spots that appear regularly on r/backpacking, which means that you may find yourself having a more authentic experience than if you had followed the advice from a published source.&nbsp;One of the drawbacks to using the subreddit for advice is that it is very jumbled in terms of how the information is ordered. Although you can search through the content by typing keywords into the search bar at the top, there are no categories that contain all the information on a particular destination all in one place.

r/CampingandHiking is a subreddit dedicated to offering advice and giving people the chance to ask questions about everything concerned with camping and hiking, be it where the best places to hike are to what exactly should be packed for a two-week trip to the Scottish Highlands. The page currently has over 600,000 subscribers, making it the go to place for those looking for a bit of advice or simply some inspiration of where to go.&nbsp;For me, the most useful part of the subreddit is the country gear reviews, such as on rucksacks, boots and tents. Reviews can vary from a few bullet points to detailed paragraphs, often from a first-hand account. This is very helpful for those planning to buy gear for a trip without knowing exactly where to spend their money, and knowing when you are being ripped off or when it is a good deal.&nbsp;Another feature of the subreddit that I like in particular is the variety of content shared on the feed, including photos, memes, lists, videos and polls. Not only does this make the page more engaging, some of the photos and videos posted give a great sense of what a place is like or how gear works when being used. There have been a number of times when I have gone onto the feed, simply to gain some inspiring ideas of where to travel to next by browsing through the various high quality photos.&nbsp;There are also post categories that can be applied to filter results and find exactly what you’re looking for. However, the problem with this is that it then takes you through to a new page that displays different forums in a fairly jumbled and broad format, making it slightly difficult to navigate.

Not only is it a great place to find inspiring ideas for travelling, it also provides a good sense of what it’s like to experience certain places without the company of a friend or family member.&nbsp;A great facet of r/SoloTravel is that there are no rules about posting links to blogs, YouTube channels or Instagram profiles, meaning you are free to promote your content there, just so long as it’s concerned with travelling solo. This gives users the opportunity to discover great content they may not otherwise have known existed and differs from other Reddits that have strict guidelines on promoting your own content.&nbsp;There is also a section containing useful links, such as for booking flights, trains and accommodation. This is great for quickly skipping to the best websites to book your travel plans and find the cheapest deals on the internet. That being said, it could do with a wider variety of links to give people more scope for deciding where to make a reservation.&nbsp;One thing that was absent from the r/SoloTravel reddit community that surprised me in particular was a section on solo travel for women. Travelling in a new country can be a nerve-racking experience, and is certainly different depending on whether you are male or female. Therefore, I would have thought that a link to a thread on solo female travel would have been a good inclusion to have had, undoubtedly making it a more complete resource for travellers.

The page currently has more than 325,000 subscribers, with hundreds of people posting content everyday.&nbsp;A feature of the subreddit that I have found particularly useful in the past is when people post the various pros and cons of living and working while constantly on the move. People can often suggest ideas that would have never have occurred to you, such as the difficulty in maintaining friendships, with each person’s opinion different from the last. This is a great resource therefore, particularly if you are thinking about dropping everything and becoming a digital nomad yourself, but are unsure of the advantages and disadvantages attached.&nbsp;Another helpful aspect of the subreddit is that it provides an insight into experiencing a country as someone that is there to <a href="https://travelsites.com/work-and-travel/">work and travel</a> at the same time, something traditional guidebooks often don’t have information on. For example, when travelling to Vietnam as a tourist you may not necessarily need to know about the strength of the Wi-Fi connection in local cafes, whereas if you are planning on working with your laptop when there, this is essential to know and on r/DigitalNomad, it is more than likely that has been covered by someone.&nbsp;One of the drawbacks to the subreddit is that it contains fairly strict guidelines on the sort of content that can be posted, meaning you almost have to print off a the list of rules to keep by you before sharing anything. Although this is common practice on Reddit, r/DigitalNomad seems to have more than the usual subreddit.

IWantOut is a subreddit that was created in 2009 and has since then gained over 1.2 million members. Hundreds of people who have expatriated, or are considering doing so, post content on its feed every day looking for advice, answers to their questions, to share their experiences, and to gather information from the many first-hand accounts of people who have already made the move abroad. The subreddit has proven to be useful to so many people from all over the world, so how great is it really? Let’s find out.<h3>Easy to Use</h3>To be honest, I’m in my early 30s and I’ve never really gotten a good grasp on Reddit but to be fair, I’ve never really bothered trying. In writing a review for the IWantOut subreddit, I’m also going to give you a quick idea of how easy it was to access and interact on it. First, know that you don’t need to be a member of Reddit to access the subreddit or to read all of the posts and comments that are there. It’s only if you want to create a post or leave a comment that you need to sign up, and though you can create an account on the site, you can also log in with an existing Apple ID or Google account.If you have the link to a subreddit, you’re good to go if all you want to do is read what has already been posted. The layout is fairly easy to follow; each post is in a separate box listed one under the other, and if you click on it, a pop-up of sorts will appear and you’ll see all of the comments that have been left under that particular post. You can close that pop-up to go back to the main subreddit page and continue scrolling on to other posts. The posts themselves will first show ones that have been pinned to the top by moderators; you can sort everything else by what’s ‘hot’, what’s been voted to the top, and by what’s been newly posted.All in all, I found it very easy to use and navigate through though the only negative I came across is that it took me a while to figure out how to search within the subreddit. So, you type in a location or what you’re looking for on the main search, and when the results come up, there will be an option to show results from the subreddit you were on.<h3>Posting on IWantOut Subreddit</h3>As I mentioned earlier, you will need to create an account/ log in if you can’t find a particular topic and want to create a post on the IWantOut subreddit. I’ve never created a post on any subreddit so in learning how to do so for this review, I want to share how easy it was to do. While on the subreddit page, there will be a ‘Create Post’ bar at the very top. When you click on it, it takes you to a page similar to those of other blog posts. You’re reminded of the rules on the right-hand side which include searching for duplicates (posts about the same topic) prior to posting and to behave as you would in real life (kindly).You then easily type in the title of your post, making sure it sticks to the main topic so that other members know what it’s about. You can then type in the body which delves into more details; it also allows you to edit certain aspects such as making text bold, adding hyperlinks, or creating a table. You can then add tags to mark it as a spoiler or NSFW if applicable and then you’re ready to go – just click ‘Post’. It’s super easy and you’ll be notified of any replies automatically (unless you otherwise check not to be).<h3>Variety of Information</h3>What I like in particular about r/IWantOut is that it differs from the usual advice about <a href="https://travelsites.com/blog/turkey-vs-greece-which-is-best-to-travel/">traveling abroad</a>, such as where to eat out or which attractions to go to, and instead focuses on the particulars of relocating to a new location for more than just a vacation. This means that you’ll find advice on what you would need for a fresh start there; you can get an idea of how much the cost of living would be in a particular place, what the job market is like, and there are even people who share details on how to get a visa into a particular country. There is a wide variety of information and they all focus on a long-term move rather than a short trip there.Another awesome thing is that the subreddit is also not limited to any particular location; the 1.2 million members come from every corner of the earth and you’ll find that almost every country has come up, whether people are looking to go there or get out of there. For example, I found posts and advice on people who want to move out of <a href="https://travelsites.com/blog/top-5-cheapest-countries-to-visit/#Morocco">Morocco</a> and those who want to move to Morocco.I’ve seen that the subreddit is used by people who want to expatriate to or from any and every continent and they vary in age, sex, career paths, and reasons for moving. That being said, the moderators encourage contributors to focus on advice for moving abroad rather than criticizing or talking about the adverse political situation, etc. in the country they are trying to leave.And if your particular topic hasn’t been covered yet, you can create an account and post within minutes and I’m sure many of the million plus members will offer their helpful thoughts and advice.<h3>Interesting Topics</h3>While many of the posts are by people looking for advice to expatriate from one location to another, I also came across some really interesting posts on the IWantOut subreddit. You can read about <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/IWantOut/comments/ngf4tn/discussion_what_does_an_eu_immigration_officer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">what immigration officers can see when they scan your passport</a> (turns out it includes any past interactions you may have had), how to <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/IWantOut/comments/nfunxw/discussion_how_do_people_typically_find_housing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">find housing abroad</a>, and even advice on what is <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/IWantOut/comments/neiq22/citizenship_hungary_what_is_acceptable_to_wear_to/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">acceptable attire when going on a consulate interview</a>. There’s a great ongoing <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/IWantOut/comments/ndwxdy/discussion_anybody_else_feel_that_they_are/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">discussion</a> for people who feel like their time to expatriate is running out and are looking for a bit of motivation. There’s even an entire <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/IWantOut/comments/ndato8/discussion_have_you_changed_your_mind_about_the/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">thread</a> dedicated to how a country handled the coronavirus pandemic affected whether people wanted to leave or move from there.Really, there’s no limit to the topics that expatriates, or hopeful expatriates, can discuss on IWantOut. The only limitation I’ve noticed is that a lot of the posts and comments are text-based; in fact, the entire subreddit is very text heavy. Unlike other <a href="https://travelsites.com/best-travel-reddits/">travel subreddits</a> that are often filled with photographs, IWantOut has very few. This could be a bummer for someone who is visual like me, but it does mean that the entire subreddit is very much full of information.<h3>IWantOut Rules</h3>As with any subreddit, there are rules which the moderators enforce. The rules for this particular subreddit include staying on the topic of legal immigration and not requesting or giving advice on conducting illegal activities such as marrying a stranger to obtain a residence visa, etc. in a new country. The rules also state to be as detailed as possible on a post and to include country of origin and destination, education, qualifications, budget, age range – basically anything that can help others get an idea of what the poster is looking for and needs. There are also rules on observing the title format and no posting or spam or advertisements. Any posts that violate these rules will be removed and multiple violations may result in the Redditor being temporarily or permanently banned from the subreddit. I find that these rules give the subreddit much needed structure; with over a million members it could get easy for posts to get off topic and for internet trolls to take over and make a mess of things.–My overall opinion of the IWantOut subreddit is that it is extremely useful for people who are looking to expatriate from one place to another. It doesn’t matter whether it’s from one city to another in the same country or if you’re going from one corner of the world to the other. The information varies from the logical such as details on the visa process and breakdowns on what cost of living is like to more opinionated such as what to expect in terms of interacting with the locals or whether you’ll come across any barriers. As I’ve mentioned multiple times in this review, the website itself (and the app) have proven to be very easy to navigate and understand even for a newbie like myself. I didn’t come across any issues other than how to search within a subreddit, which wasn’t very obvious but, I learned, can be done easily. With a following of more than 640,000 subscribers, it has become one of the best resources around for the frugal travellers amongst us, where people can ask questions, post photos and let others know their thoughts on how to travel on a shoestring.&nbsp;One of my favourite parts of r/Shoestring is the first hand accounts of trips abroad, usually accompanied by a series of photos taken whilst there. These often provide more useful and up-to-date information than you’d find in a guidebook, particularly if searching for a cheap getaway.&nbsp;Also, unlike a guidebook, if you have a question then you can simply ask on the page. Although everyday hundreds of people share their alternatives to pricey destinations and where to find the best deals, if you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can post a question and you can be sure that someone will be on hand to answer it. This is perfect for planning a trip since you can take the advice of someone who has been there to help budget for when you arrive.&nbsp;One of the downsides that I encountered when using r/Shoestring was that it lacks any external content in the top menu, such as suggestions for the best places to book flights, reserve a room, book a train or rent a car. A few links to their recommended websites would make the subreddit even more comprehensive, as there is no really easy way to find out the information without posing the question yourself or scrolling through to see if someone has already posted about it.

r/freelance is a subreddit aimed at freelancers and those interested in becoming a freelancer, featuring a range of content from articles to photos to videos that offers hints, tips, advice, questions and inspiration. The page has nearly 80,000 subscribers, while new and original content is shared on the feed everyday.&nbsp;For me, the best feature of the subreddit is the ability to ask questions and receive answers, sometimes within a matter of minutes, on any query you may have with regards to the world of freelancing. The subreddit gives an idea of how many of the subscribers are online at any one time, meaning there could potentially be a whole host of people ready to give you advice, no matter what you want to find out about. I found this particularly useful as although articles and blogs have plenty of information on freelancing, being able to post your own questions and receive answers that are specific to you is a great resource.&nbsp;Another good feature is the inclusion of links to other subreddits that may be more tailored to the information you’re looking for. Each link has a short description as to the type of information you will find there, meaning you don’t have to waste time on one subreddit trying to find something out and can quickly go to the one most suited to your needs.&nbsp;However, a drawback I found with r/freelance was that it wasn’t aimed solely at travellers and was more of a general forum for freelancer questions, particularly those trying to make it as freelancers in the United States. Therefore, if you are after information about being a freelancer while travelling, I would recommend the subreddit r/DigitalNomads over r/freelancer.

r/onebag is a subreddit devoted to helping people become more minimalistic in the way they pack for travelling, offering advice and answering questions on how to start packing fewer, higher quality items packed into one bag – as the name suggests – to make lugging it around simpler. The page currently has more than 44,000 subscribers, with hundreds of posts appearing on the feed every day.&nbsp;One of my favourite parts of the subreddit is the packing lists that people post for trips to different countries. For example, what you would pack for a beach holiday to Mallorca is very different to what you would include in your rucksack for a trip to Patagonia, meaning there is obviously no single way to pack a bag. With r/onebag you will find a range of different lists across hundreds of countries, allowing you to find the one to suit your preferences.&nbsp;Another little quirk of the subreddit that I find both interesting and useful is the diversity of suggestions beyond simply packing a bag for travelling to a destination, such as the recommendation of what to pack for a night spent in an airport, such as an eye mask, battery pack and earplugs. Although there are other forums that recommend packing for popular desitnations, it is much more difficult to know what to take for something like sleeping in an airport, yet r/onebag has this covered thanks to the copious number of suggestions shared by people.&nbsp;However, in my opinion the subreddit lacks photo content that would make the posts a bit more exciting and break up the text a bit. Usually, when reading a blog post or article, it is divided up into various bits of text and photos, yet with r/onebag it is principally text. The addition of photos would make it even more comprehensive.
